The department is charged with the responsibility of controlling and management of environmental pollution and stimulating improved environmental sanitation activities across the state. This mandate is exercised through monitoring of water, air, land and noise pollution that may arise as a result of domestic, commercial, and industrial activities as well as controlling pollution through Laboratory analyses of environmental media such as air, land and water.
The environmental management strategies employed involve the development of appropriate policies, review of laws and regulations, development of standards, monitoring the state of the environment and ensuring compliance with same through enforcement of environmental laws and guidelines. The Department has two units namely.

Regular review of sanitation policies
Ensuring clean and conducive built-up environment by promoting good sanitary culture among the citizenry
Making Sanitation a community-driven exercise through effective sensitization and advocacy programmes.
Collaboration with Landlords/Residents Association on environmental sanitation issues
Environmental Sanitation monitoring (general, periodic and monthly)
Periodic environmental sanitation sensitization awareness campaign across the State.
Enforcement of state sanitation laws as well as prosecution of defaulters
Attending to public complaints on sanitation.
Supervision of fumigation activities across the State to prevent disease outbreak and spread of communicable diseases.

Prompt response to pollution issues through scientific, qualitative and quantitative assessment of pollutants.
Provision of mitigation measures to arrest incidences of pollution of water, air and land.
Embarking on periodic compliance monitoring to all industries in the State with a view to ensuring compliance with the best environmental practice.
Attending to public complaints on environmental pollution matters.
Management of the Ministry’s analytical laboratory.
Noise pollution control
Front runner in making policies, regulations, guidelines, and standards on environmental pollution issues.
Monitoring of Environmental media (air, water, soil) as basis for early warning signals in disasters management.
Pollution management to determine type, source and level of pollution
Setting and monitoring emission/effluent discharge standards.
Ensuring that all chemicals used in the production sector of Ondo State comply with the National acceptable list of chemicals.
Monitoring and enforcement of all gas and filling stations for compliance with environmental standards and regulations.
Organizing stakeholder’s meetings on pollution matters.
